1300 Squadron ATC: Sports

Athletics 2008 - Sunday May 11th

Nine cadets represented 1300 (Sutton-in-Ashfield) Squadron in the annual Wing Athletics Competition at Quibell Park, Scunthorpe on Sunday 11^th May 2008.

Corporal Daniel Barnes (15) was amongst the first to compete in the track events, 100m – Class B Youths. He came 4^th in his heat but didn’t make it to the final.

Sergeant Matthew Cordon (18) also competed in the 100m – Class C Junior Men. He too came 4^th but entered a fast time to compete in the final later in the day, but he only came 8^th.

Cadet Tim Wells (14) competed in his 1st and 2^nd track event of the day in the 400m and 200m – Class B Youths. He came 3^rd in 400m and 1^st in 200m but didn’t achieve a fast enough time to win a medal.

Sergeant Cordon competed in his 2^nd track event, also in the 200m in his Class C category. He came 4^th.

Cadet Martin Thomas (14) competed in the 800m – Class B Youths. He came 6^th.

Cadet Tom Wells competed in his 2^nd track event of 1500 in his Class B category. He came 3^rd in his heat but again missed out on a fast time to win any medals.

The only girl to compete in a track event was Corporal Sarah Livermore (16). She competed in the 1500m – Class E Senior Girls. She stated that she normally came last, not because she was slow but because all the other girls behind her dropped out. Today was not the case; she didn’t come last – but next to last!

In the field events, the day started with Flight Sergeant Luke Gamble (18) throwing the Javelin and the Shot and then a last minute swap to the Long Jump in the afternoon – Class C Junior Men. He came 5^thin the Javelin.

Corporal Kirsty Newton (18) was the only girl to compete in the field events in Long Jump and Javelin – Class E Senior Girls.

Corporal Barnes competed in his 2^nd event of the day in the Discus – Class B.

Cadet Adam Taylor (15), a newcomer to the Squadron, competed in the Long Jump for Class B Youths. He gave us all a surprise by winning a Bronze medal.

Last but not least, Cadet Matthew Parry (14) competed in the Shot for Class A Boys.

The final events for the day were the 4x100m Relays. The Squadron only had 1 team in the Class B Youths namely Corporal Barnes and Cadets Taylor, Thomas and Wells.

Cross Country 2007

Eight cadets represented the Squadron on Sunday 18th November. Although a bit wet, ideal conditions for cross country, the results were as follows:-

Boys Event out of 67

Martin Thomas - came 49th
Mathew Parry - came 59th

Youths Event out of 63

Aron Marshall - came 6th and is a non-travelling reserve for the Regional Cross Country on Sunday 9th December
Antony Shaw - came 39th
Joseph Stones - came 41st - too quick for my camera to catch!
Mathew Bonser - came 55th
Scott Walters - came 56th

Junior Mens event out of (too cold to count)

Sergeant Mathew Cordon - came 21st

Trent Wing Athletics Championships

On Sunday 29^th April 2007, 1300 (Sutton-in-Ashfield) Squadron took 20 cadets to the Annual Trent Wing Athletics Championships at Quibell Park, Scunthorpe.

Cadets, both boys and girls, were entered into all the track events from 100m to 1500m and 4x100m Relay; and field events ranging from Discus to Long Jump.

The Squadron had no winners this time but they came a close 2^nd and 3^rd in a few events; Cpl Christopher Jones (16) came 2^nd in his Class B Youths category the discus; Sergeant Matthew Cordon (17) came 2^nd and 3^rd in 200m and 100m respectively in his Class C Junior Men category.

Both cadets will now represent Trent Wing and the Squadron in the Regional Championships to be held on Sunday 20^th May 2007.

Regional Cross Country Sunday 10th December 2006

Update on the Cross Country event from Sunday 19th November 2006.

Cadet Aron Marshall (Boys event), Flight Sergeant Matthew Turner and Cadet Luke Armstrong (Youths event) represented our Squadron and Trent Wing at the Regional Cross Country Championships at RAF Cranwell on Sunday 10th December 2006. Results are as follows:-

Boys Event

Aron Marshall - came 10th

Trent Wing came 2nd overall

Youths Event

Matthew Turner - came 21st

Luke Armstrong - came 10th

Trent Wing came 6th overall

Although the boys will not be representing Central & East Region at the Corps Championships; they were presented with a 'Wing Blue' badge for representing Trent Wing.

Wing Cross Country at RAF Cranwell 19 Nov 2006

The Squadron arrived at RAF Cranwell with eleven cadets participating in the Wing Cross Country Championship, with only a small hope of a placement in any one of the five categories - Boys, Youths, Junior Men, Junior Girls and Senior Girls.

First up at 1100 hours were the Boys and Junior Girls. The Squadron had 6 Boys in this category and none in the Junior Girls.

Second to go at 1130 hours were the Youths and the Squadron had 4 entrants.

Last to go at 1200 hours were the Junior Men and Senior Girls - the Squadron had only 1 entrant in the Senior Girls - Sharon Parker.

The results are as follows:

Boys event

Aron Marshall came 5th

Anthony Shaw came 34th

Joseph Stones came 39th followed rapidly behind by

Matthew Bonser came in at 40th and the finally a while later

Martin Thomas came 57th and I missed a photo finish of

Luke Sheffield in at 58th

Youths event in reverse order

Luke Chadburn in at 46th

Michael Tucker in at 44th

Matthew Turner wanted 3rd but he got in at 4th and finally

Luke Armstrong came in at 1st

Senior Girls event

Sharon Parker came in at 29th

Therefore, Luke Armstrong and Matthew Turner will represent the Squadron and Trent Wing at the Regional Cross Country Championships on Sunday 10th December 2006 at RAF Cranwell. Aron Marshall is a first reserve in his category.

For once, we looked forward to staying for the Final Parade where Luke Armstroing was presented with his Gold medal and Trophy for the Squadron.
