1300 Squadron ATC: Squadron Parade Nights

A Visit by the RAF Careers Officer

On Monday 11^th February 2008 the Squadron was visited by the RAF Careers Officers (AFCO – Air Force Careers Officer), Corporal Allie Hunter.

She gave a small talk on the careers in the Royal Air Force but the majority of the night was spent by cadets taking on initiative exercises; a test in leadership, initiative and teamwork; given by the AFCO. A good night for all judging by the pictures taken!

Royal Marines presentation

The Squadron had a visit from the Royal Marines on Wednesday 23^rd January.

A Corporal and 3 Marines gave a video presentation about life in the Royal Marines. Later one of the Marines and the Corporal gave a practical presentation about cooking whilst on active duty.

The cadets were given a taste test with the contents of a Ration pack. The Ration Packs contained biscuits, dried food, chocolate, pate and even powdered juice.

The Squadron will close for the Christmas and New Year holidays from Wednesday 20th December 2006.

The Squadron will re-open on Monday 8th January 2007.

If you've just dropped in and what to know more please take at look at this website and see what we've done the past year. The website has only been open since October 2006 so there isn't much to view but give us time and there'll be lots more to see.

The evening started off with Promotions, as follows:-

Cadet Sarah Livermore to Corporal

Corporal Michael Tucker to Sergeant

Sergeant Matthew Turner to Flight Sergeant

Congratulations to all three cadets.

The evening progressed with the cadets preparing a First Aid presentation for the CO. Whilst this was happening the CO, myself (AWO) and all NCO's (including the newby) had an NCO's meeting.

Flight Sergeant Turner is now the Senior NCO of the Squadron. Jobs were dished out to all the Junior NCO's - too many to mention but here are some breaking points:-

Newsletter/Website - Corporal Livermore will now help me (AWO) with regard to obtaining journals for the Newsletter/Website - any cadet wishing to contribute to the Newsletter/Website must now go through Cpl Livermore before any final documents are approved by the Editor (thats me, the AWO if you hadn't already figured that out and Cpl Livermore is my Reporter!).

Adventure Training - All Junior NCO's (Cpl Jones, Chadburn and Livermore) will be tasked in obtaining exercises from the cadets and passing them onto C.I. Young for approval.

A final note - Cadet Aron Marshall is now first reserve for the Regional Cross Country Championship at RAF Cranwell this weekend so GOOD LUCK to him, Flt Sgt Turner and our lucky runner Cadet Luke Armstrong!

This Monday evening was engulfed by meetings.

First a Committee Meeting and then Flight Meetings.

The Flights discussed what they would like for 2007 and hopefully, next year, the Squadron can do some of what was discussed. Watch this space!

Leavers on the Squadron were Sergeant Danielle Gent and her brother Cadet Hayden Gent - who have left to us to join another Squadron - Good luck in your new Squadron!

Monday evening was Interflight Competition. It involved a ten pin bowling competition and a drill competition between Spitfire and Tornado flights.

Spitfire won the drill competition and Tornado won the ten pin bowling competition.

But Spitfire flight won overall. Congratulations!

Two new recruits joined us this evening – Lee Moss and Daniel Caunt.

Tonight was the night they did a Night Exercise planned by Corporal Luke Chadburn.

The scenario was that the cadets were surrounded by the enemy and they needed to get supplies urgently.

The plan was to get a written message (help we need supplies asap) back to Base camp i.e. AWO Coleman.

But the enemy - played by the NCO's could trap any cadet trying to get a message out of their camp to Base and steal the message.

Be warned, Enemy, there are some fake teams heading out that could put you off the scent!

Cadets 1 - the enemy stole a fake message giving a point to the cadets

Everyone enjoyed the night - even though they got wet and dirty - but that's how they like it!

Feel sorry for their mums, though!

New recruit joined the Squadron - Jack Chamberlain - son and nephew (John Chamberlain) of 2 ex-cadets of the Squadron from the late 70's and early 80's.

No more exams until next year!

The cadets spent an evening practicing for their up and coming night exercise for Wednesday 22nd November.

The night exercise was planned by Corporal Luke Chadburn. Hope it works, cya Wednesday!

New recruit joined the Squadron - Ryan Else - the younger brother of ex-cadets Sergeant Daniel Attwood and Flt.Sgt Elaine Attwood.

Another night of lessons for the cadets in preparation for their exams on Wednesday 15^th November. Only one more night to go!

But before all that, the cadets practiced a little night drill in preparation for the up and coming Rememberance Parade on Sunday 12^th November. All looking good!

Another night of lessons in preparation for their Exams in mid November.

The second half of the night was taken by Flt.Lt.Ridley who gave an insight into First Aid in preparation for some lessons to be done later to enable the cadets to pass and gain a First Aid badge.

Lessons were on the menu again, but only 2 weeks to go before the exams and then the cadets can have some fun for Christmas!

Aircraft Recognition was taken by the First Class to Leading cadets.

The night was run by NCO's starting with a competition to build a paper aeroplane. The competition was to see which team could build a aeroplane that could fly the farthest. So, using their knowledge of Principles of Flight, two teams and the NCO's competed against each other. The winner was eventually crowned Cpl Jones, a self confessed expert of making paper aeroplanes in a location not specified!

The remainder of the night was an initiative exercise. The brief was that the budget was cut and a combined cadet force of Sea, Land and Air had to be created. The teams had to find a new name, new uniform and ethos for this new combined cadet force. The idea of the exercise was to find which cadets had leadership qualities. Overall the ideas were unique! The cadet with the leadership qualities will be identified at a later date .... watch this space!

The night started with a photo shoot, courtesy of Quest Images. All cadets were given the opportunity to have a Squadron photograph taken. All cadets were in their best uniform. Say cheese!

An ideal Christmas gift to family and friends.

The Staff also had their photographs taken for a Staff Noticeboard. Hopefully, all photographs will appear on this very website.

During the evening, an enrolment ceremony was performed. Cadet Sharon Parker was formally enrolled into the Squadron by the Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Phil Ridley. She is now a fully fledged cadet and can now do all the activities within the ATC.

Also, Cadets Martin Thomas and Sharon Parker completed their First Class Cadet exam. Martin passed with a CREDIT and Sharon passed with a DISTINCTION, the first for a good few months.

Unfortunately, Mr. Young's probationer class is getting smaller and smaller so we need more recruits!

Lessons were undertaken for the forthcoming Corps examinations in November.

Probationers were being taught the syllabus to become a First Class cadet. Probationer Stefan Stickley passed his final exam to become a First Class cadet. Congratulations!

First Class cadets were taught Principles of Flight for their exam to Leading cadet status.

Leading cadets were taught Propulsion for their exam to Senior cadet Status.

Senior cadets were being prepared for their Staff Part 1 & 2 exam.

The Squadron had a visit from a Police Officer with the Nottinghamshire Constabulary, who is based at Ashfield Comprehensive School as a School Liaison Officer in association with D.A.R.E. The visit was to make the Cadets aware of the dangers of drugs and their consequences.

The night was rounded up by an Interflight Competition of skittles.

The Squadron had a visit from AFCO - thats Armed Forces Careers Officer - the Corporal gave out information to anyone who wanted to know about the Royal Air Force. The cadets and the AFCO Cpl also played a few communication games.

Cadet Adam Chambers has 'left the building' - that is he has left the Squadron.

Cadet Martin Thomas was enrolled onto the Squadron by Flt.Lt.Ridley.
